Methodology · South Africa
How the South Africa tracker is built. Data is official and read on every build.
Sources
- FSCA, list of crypto asset service providers (CASPs) licensed under the FAIS Act, March 2026: all four sections (licensed; product categories removed; lapsed; provisionally withdrawn). Rows are read from the PDF's tables; the running numbers in each section must run 1 to n without gaps, and no FSP number may appear twice.
- FSCA press release of 15 April 2026: application, investigation and inspection figures, each checked against the release text on every build.
- FSCA list titled April 2024, still linked from the FSCA home page: used only as a dated earlier snapshot.
Source Hierarchy
- official FSCA.
- company none used.
- press · secondary none used.
Names and Labels
Names are shown as on the FSCA list, converted to title case; a short name (Luno, VALR, Altcoin Trader, Ovex, Yellow Card, FNB) is used only where the FSCA legal name is that brand. We do not link a licence to a brand that is not named on the list. “Not on FSCA list” covers global brands we checked; it is not a finding about how they serve South African users.
Limits
- The list carries a month, not a day, and no licence dates.
- No newer FSCA list was found as of 21 Oct 2026. The FSCA's licensing figures date from 31 March 2026.
- The figures for applications still being considered (82) are the remainder after approvals, declines and withdrawals.
