Methodology · Canada
How the Canada tracker is built. Data is official and read on every build.
Sources
- OSC, Crypto businesses: registered crypto asset trading platforms (category and the most recent decisions), platforms no longer registered (with the OSC's note), issuer undertakings for value-referenced crypto assets and other exempt crypto businesses.
- FINTRAC public notice of administrative monetary penalties: entries that name a crypto business or brand.
- Capital Markets Tribunal and OSC records of the Ontario cases against KuCoin, Bybit and OKX; amounts are checked against the source text on every build.
- Stablecoin Act (Justice Laws) and Finance Canada for stablecoin dates.
Source Hierarchy
- official OSC, FINTRAC, Capital Markets Tribunal, Justice Laws, Finance Canada.

- press · secondary none used.
Brands
A legal name is grouped under a brand only where the official text names the brand (e.g. “operating as Kraken”, “also operating as KuCoin”, “a subsidiary of MoonPay Inc.”, “www.okx.com”) or where the OSC links the businesses (acquisitions).
Labels
- Registered crypto trading platform: on the OSC table of registered platforms.
- Other OSC relief or undertaking: crypto-backed lending, VRCA trading or a stablecoin issuer undertaking.
- No longer registered: on the OSC table of platforms not currently registered.
- Enforcement, not registered: a FINTRAC penalty or tracked Ontario case, and not on the registered list.
- Not on OSC lists: global brands we checked; this is not a finding that they serve Canadians.
Limits
- The OSC page covers Ontario. The CSA's national list (securities-administrators.ca) answers automated clients with a JavaScript challenge, which we do not bypass, so approvals limited to other provinces are not shown.
- FINTRAC's money services business registry search could not be reached from our servers; MSB registration is not checked.
- The OSC lists only the most recent decisions per platform, so first-registration dates may be earlier than shown.
